Now Bombing Onstage: Pinky Lovejoy
A few weeks ago, after I decided when my move would be taking place, I decided to plan a few things to look forward to. You see, I knew once I got here, I'd be busy with unpacking, job searching, you name it, and to get through that drudgery I wanted to have a few planned events to look forward to in the future. One of those events was going to The Jon Lovitz Comedy Club in Universal City.
As we all know, I'm a huge fan of all things SNL and the era of Lovitz/Nealon/MacDonald/Sandler/Spade/Farley/Rock was my very favorite. When I found out about Jon having his own comedy club, I was thrilled. When I found out he headlined the club almost every Wednesday night, I was giddy to say the least. So, when I learned that he was performing this Wednesday (the 7th), I bought a ticket and anxiously waited for the big day.
So, I'm sitting in the audience, alone (don't judge me), and the show is kinda going long. Apparently there are usually two shows (at eight and ten), but this night only had the one early show. Since we had all the time in the world, Jon (who was funny, but a little off his game) decided to ask for volunteers from the audience to come up on stage. Now, I don't know what possessed me to raise my hand. We all know I haven't performed in like ten years. I don't have material. I don't have timing. I don't have anything, really, except a passion for stand-up comedy and love of anything funny. Two guys raised their hands and I watched them perform thinking, "I could do that. Why couldn't I do that? When else would I get the chance?" So, when they were done, my hand went up. I went onstage. AT THE JON LOVITZ COMEDY CLUB. IN UNIVERSAL CITY. With Jon ONSTAGE with me. Oh, yeah. Pressure.
I'd like to tell you this story has a happy ending and all my shoddy, quickly put together material killed when I said it. I'd like to tell you I had the audience in stitches and was invited to perform again and again. I'd like to tell you I got, oh, say, ANY laughs at all, but.....sadly, that would be a lie. I bombed in the biggest bomb of all time. In fact, I bombed so hard that it should've been hilarious in itself. I had one good line when I razzed Jon about something (because we're BFFs now) and he gave it to me so at least I could get ONE laugh. Sad. Still, I don't regret doing it at all. I mean, really, when else would that ever happen? What an experience! What a story. What a disaster.
