And now it's that time of the week when I proclaim my absolute and undying love for some random and little known 80's movie. For today's consideration, I give you: The Pirate Movie, one of the greatest and funniest random musical treasures of our time. I remember being around seven or eight when it came out and seeing commercials about it on TV. Somehow, we convinced our grandparents to take us to see this movie when they were watching us one weekend. I can still see the looks on their faces when the movie ended. Pure terror! Of course, all the sexual innuendos were lost on us, we didn't know any better, and we thought the music and the love story was great. Flash forward twenty years when we watched the movie as adults and, oh my....I can't believe we sat through that with our grandparents. What must they have thought? Basically, The Pirate Movie is a take on The Pirates of Penzance (am I spelling that right?) starring Kristy McNichol and Christopher Atkins. It's filled with humor, music, a great love story, and hilarious characters. It features one of the funniest songs (which still plays on my iPod) called, "Pumping and Blowing." And you've got to give credit to a movie which can stop itself at the end and say, "Hey! Wait a minute! We want a happy ending!" and then have everything work out. It's exactly that type of tongue-in-cheek humor which makes this a movie not to be missed. :)
