Californians are Confused by Pioneer Day
Growing up in California, I didn't really know what Pioneer Day was. Sure, once a year we decorated our big wheels and bikes with streamers and went around the block (or the church parking lot) dressed up like pioneers (see horrifying picture as evidence), but we didn't really know what we were doing. I'm sure there were lessons and speeches, but who listens to those things as a kid. When I got to BYU (summer school), all I knew was that school was out for the day, so I was stoked. In fact, I'd met a guy at a dance who took me out on Pioneer Day and it was the first time I saw all the Mo's lose their freaking minds on the temple grounds. I didn't know there could be a holiday bigger than the 4th, but I was mistaken. (As a funny side note, I was sure the guy I'd met was going to make me that stereotypical BYU Freshman - married at 18 to an RM and then lived happily ever after with 8 kids, a mini-van, and the perfect life. In fact, when I left for school, I'm pretty sure people put bets down on how quickly I'd be married.) It was a fun night and he was a cute boy, but whatever. I'm sure he married the next person after me (perhaps that's where the trend began??). Anyway, I've lived in Utah for a long time now (she says, horrified) and should probably learn more about the holiday, aside from it being extra time off work. I'll definitely add it to my list of things to do. :)
Why are you wearing a quilt?
