Yakima - The Palm Springs of Washington

Today was a gorgeous day and we spent most of it tooling about town in a convertible Mustang (because that's how I roll). :) I had no idea Yakima would be as beautiful as it is (yes, I'm being serious). There are amazing vineyards and fields of green everywhere you look. Of course, on the other hand, there are also plenty of funny signs around town. Here are some entertaining signs and places we found.

Who thought of this? In the middle of a hop field (I have no legs!)

What exactly is Yakimex?
Does something look wrong with these lights?
My hair looks so cool while riding in a convertible :)

I'm heading home tomorrow...fun times lie ahead with my long drive I'm sure.

Hi Pinky--
I live in Yakima (I know, so sad...)and I have a blog on blogspot titled "NotQuitePalmSprings" where I look for style in this town & try to document it with my Nikon. I loved the pics of your visit here & all the corny signs. What can I say?
Some guy decided the weather was so nice here we should call it the Palm Springs of Washington so he put up the sign & no matter how much people laugh at it, it's still there.
I don't think he stays in Yakima during Dec., Jan., & Feb when it's 0 degrees out, the wind is blowing 90 mph & there's 8" of snow on the ground. Not so Palm Springs then.
Anyway--enjoyed your blog & feel free to visit mine.

Layne Staley, the late singer of Alice in Chains, is actually the one who called Yakima the Palm Springs of Washington. Why, I do not know, because Yakima sucks.

The Palm Springs of Washington sign was originally erected to commemorate the Yakima Centennial and that is what it said (Centennial 1885-1985). When the centennial was over he then removed the word Centennial and years then replaced it with "the Palm Springs of". I believe he did that around 1987 and the rest is history.
